How I Found Storytelling

How I Found Storytelling

In 2015, I started creating short clips of my hikes in the Catskill Mountains and road-biking adventures using an iPhone, sharing them online as I explored what visual storytelling could be. Shortly after, my aunt gifted me a GoPro. That gift changed everything. I began capturing more, editing more, and experimenting with how to tell better stories. It marked a turning point that pulled me deeper into the craft.

Even in those early moments, I found myself drawn not just to the visuals, but to the rhythm and emotion behind the footage. I was beginning to develop a skill that would define my career: the ability to observe someone’s world and translate it into story that is truthful, emotive, and resonant.

By 2016, inspired by creators like Casey Neistat and Peter McKinnon, I invested in a drone and my first DSLR, unlocking a new level of cinematic potential and storytelling depth.

In 2017, a pivotal moment occurred when my sister tagged me in a Facebook post. A local gym owner named Ed was looking for a video intern. At the time, I was balancing college, selling insurance, and freelance video gigs. Ed introduced me to Gary Vaynerchuk’s DailyVee vlog series, saying, "This is the kind of content I want to create" I quickly began producing dozens of long-form vlogs for Ed and soon built out a lean media team around him. As I traveled and captured Ed’s daily life as an entrepreneur, our storytelling landed him speaking opportunities and recognition in his niche. I learned how to take the seemingly mundane and shape it into something meaningful, turning raw footage into narratives filled with emotion, action, and mission. We realized the immense power of authentic, real-time vlogging at a moment when few entrepreneurs were documenting their lives. Seeing a broader need, we co-founded a content agency to help creators and entrepreneurs grow their influence through authentic, long-form storytelling, the highest-leverage format for building trust and scaling meaningful audiences.

In 2018, I woke up to a DM from a stranger saying, "I think Garyvee is talking about in this video." To my surprise, my films had caught Gary Vaynerchuk’s attention. His team was looking for a videographer. someone who could not only film but deeply understand how to tell long-form stories. I was hired onto his personal content team during a moment of real need. It was an apex moment in my career. I had spent the past three years building toward this, sharpening my skills in shooting ten hours of footage and turning it into a compelling 15-minute vlog by the next day. That was my superpower.

Landing the role felt like winning the creative lottery. My days were filled with capturing Gary’s business life, but more than that, I was learning how to shape a fast-moving life into stories that connected. My ability to deeply observe, feel, and carve out a narrative became a key part of the team’s rhythm. I wasn’t just creating content, I was helping Gary communicate the truth of who he was in a way that resonated across platforms. That same skill, understanding someone at a deep level and telling their story clearly and powerfully was what earned me the job, and it’s what has guided my creative path ever since.

The short films, vlogs, and creative collaborations from this period deeply shaped the artist I am today. I learned to prioritize speed, anticipate platform shifts, and innovate daily. My role quickly expanded from filming and editing to leading strategic creative projects within VaynerX, including spearheading major launches like VeeFriends, Gary’s innovative NFT project building intellectual property through digital collectibles and VeeCon, a major conference uniting creators, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders. Additionally, I collaborated with Director Nema Vand and DP, David Rock (DRock) on "Becoming Beeple," a short film documenting the historic $69M NFT sale, premiering in Hudson Yards, NYC in 2021. The journey with Gary is a chapter I’ll always cherish. He’s as strong a leader as he is a businessman, and the lessons I learned under his guidance will stay with me for the rest of my professional life.

At the close of 2023, Caleb Ralston connected me with Grammy-nominated artist Mike Posner, known for hits like "Cooler Than Me" and transformative journeys such as walking across America. Over the next 18 months, I built a five-person creative powerhouse from scratch, launching Mike’s fifth studio album, The Beginning, which quickly amassed over 21 million streams. Simultaneously, we scaled his digital community, Inner Bloom, to over 6,000 members in less than 90 days, driven entirely by purposeful, mission-aligned storytelling designed to foster genuine connection and transformative impact. My ability to intuitively understand Mike’s message and bring it to life across formats became the core of our creative rhythm. I worked closely with Mike to distill his transformation, his philosophy, his vision and his inner work into story-led content that felt honest and magnetic. I wasn’t just producing content. I was helping him communicate a deeper truth. His words said it best: "He found a way to tell my story on social media more authentically than I could myself." This period marked a significant milestone as I leveraged insights from my years with Gary to elevate an already established brand. It was the moment I realized I wasn’t just a filmmaker or strategist, I was someone who could help people step into the fullest version of their story. And that realization laid the foundation for Steal Jason.

Launching Steal Jason

Launching Steal Jason

Launching Steal Jason

Since the beginning, my strength has been helping people see their own story, then helping the world see it too. I'm not romantic about the medium. Whether it's a vlog, a written carousel, or a brand film, what matters is the truth we're trying to express. From Ed to Gary to Mike, my superpower has been my ability to study someone, feel their rhythm, and translate their story into something that lands.

That’s the mission behind Steal Jason: strategy and creative for people who have something real to say and are ready to say it in a way that finally connects. Because the right story, told the right way, doesn’t just grow a brand, it reveals the truth behind it.

Today, through my creative studio, Steal Jason, I channel these diverse experiences to elevate visionary artists, bold founders, and influential public figures by crafting strategic storytelling and cinematic creative that ignites clarity, inspires community, and propels meaningful momentum.
